3DPartFinder uses geometric CAD data for its search rather than alphanumeric characters. It can search a database with millions of parts and identify duplicate and/or similar geometry in seconds without the need for manual part pre-classification.
How does it work?
Our research and development team has initiated research in the field of 3D model analysis for similarity and shape-based representation since 1998. Our team has created the semantics that best extract the essence of 3D shape and the algorithms to allow for efficient comparisons. We have worked in collaboration with leading manufacturers in the aerospace industry.
One of the fundamentals of the semantics is the “signature” of the 3D model. The signature of a 3D CAD model is a small file (roughly 15K) created from its shape analysis. This signature is not a compressed version of the CAD model. It is a mathematical representation of the 3D shape that is irreversible, encrypted and therefore protects the intellectual property of its owner.
Once the software installation is completed, the 3DPartFinder indexing operation automatically creates the search database of the corresponding fingerprints.
The other key component is the 3DPartFinder search engine. Using proprietary algorithms, 3DPartFinder will compare the signature or “fingerprint” of the reference model to those in its database. The results are then displayed in a SolidWorks Assembly. This shape search method matches our intuitive notion of shape resemblance and is invariable under different axis systems.
There is a similarity between Attribute Search (Google™, Bing™, Yahoo™ etc.) and Geometric Search (3DPartFinder™): Both approaches are 100% automatic, provide interactive response times and can handle huge data volumes. Geometric search is different, however, in that it is independent from any alpha-numerical description. It is different from the attributes, spoken language and interpretation from the search engine.
3DPartFinder can be used by itself or as a complement to a traditional alphanumeric metadata search process.
